AMU teachers on strike against campus closure

LUCKNOW: Aligarh Muslim University Teachers' Association on Monday began an indefinite sit-in on the campus against the institution's indefinite closure following a clash between rival students groups last week.

The sit-in came after the association's talks with vice-chancellor P K Abdul Azis failed earlier in the day.

"(The agitation) will continue till the time the VC revokes the order of imposing sine die closure and restores the session," AMUTA president Professor Abdul Qayuum told TOI.

Qayuum said the arbitrary action could jeopardise the student's career. "The situation, at no point of time, warranted an indefinite closure. Let the administration take action against the guilty, but why should the sincere lot suffer due to notorious activities of a handful non-serious elements," he asked. He said the dharna would be called off only when the date of reopening is announced.

The association decided to stage the sit-in after a meeting of its 250-odd members on Sunday. The association also demanded ouster of the VC and suspension of proctor Professor Mujahid Beg.

The university authorities succeeded in getting most hostels vacated, but the situation continued to be tense on Monday. "The VC has spent a small fortune in installing CCTV cameras. Instead of ordering a closure, he should go through the video footage and identify the culprits, suspend or rusticate them," said AMU Students' Union president Abu Irfan Farooqui. "But putting in peril the future of 27,000 boys and girls was inexplicable."

The union has given a 24-hour ultimatum to the VC and is mulling the next course of action, Farooqui said. The student leader also expressed surprise that the VC decided upon the closure without assessing the situation. "He was not oven in Aligarh at that point of time and relied solely on hearsay," Farooqui said.

University authorities tried to play down the issue. AMU PRO Rahat Abrar told TOI that the university would be holding all entrance exams as per schedule and reopen soon.
